The Free State province commonly known as the food basket of South Africa, is still a leading agricultural commodities producer. 2011 and 2012 cropping season statistics shows that:-

  • Cherries, 90% of South Africa's total,
  • Sorghum, 53% of South Africa's total,
  • Sunflower, 51% of South Africa's total,
  • Maize, 40% of South Africa's total,
  • Groundnuts , 38% of South Africa's total,
  • Potatoes, 30% of South Africa's total,
  • Wheat, 29% of South Africa's total

Agro-processing opportunities

The Free State Agricultural landscape present significant opportunities for moving agricultural produce along the value chain.

Maize Value chain

Maize is fully value added in Free State. There is significant opportunity for setting up maize grits plants next to grain silos in key maize growing areas in South Western Free State.

Maize grit uses

Ingredient in snacks, food blending, bread mixes, soup powder, stabilizer, ice cream cones, biscuits, added to processed meat, fixing agent for minerals and vitamins, PET food products . FS produced 4052000 tons (40%) of Maize in 2012.

2.2.1.	Wheat is fully value added in Free State

Wheat is fully value added in Free State

  • Primary Production : 540 000 tons (29% of SA total crop, 2012),
  • Fully beneficiated in FS,
  • For human consumption Human Consumption ( bread, biscuits, breakfast cereals and rusks)and remainder for animal feeds.
  • Some for production of alcohol , ethanol and as absorbing agents for diapers, adhesives and industrial uses such as such as starch on coatings.

Potatoes

South African Potatoes

  • Primary Production : 2 197 000 tons (2012).
  • 18% (395 460t) was processed into potato chips, both fresh and frozen, 9% ( 35 591 tons) was used for canning, mixed vegetables and soup.
  • Human Consumption = 1874 000 tons.
  • Opportunity = potato processing into potato chips, potato crisps and potato soup powders.
